Folks came in
one after another starting at 5:30 PM. Willie and Monty came from
Richmond and Williamsburg, VA, respectively, braving a potential snow
event. Etao and Pete's group came from the Somerset and Jersey City, NJ
areas. Ernie from Alexandria, VA; Rico, based in Michigan but with work
assignment in DC; Didin from the Princeton, NJ area; Wilford from
Edison, NJ and Norby from Silver Spring, MD. Steve Dionisio, Monty's
son followed later from Columbia, MD.
We hit the
ground running with appetizers - crab dip and assorted crackers, mixed
nuts, cocktail shrimp and chocolate pretzels (for the kids). Major
drinks included Chilean Merlot, Argentinian Malbec, California
Chardonnay and lots of San Miguel beer. Dinner opened with traditional
Maryland cream of crab soup laced with sherry and Old Bay seasoning.
Main course - potato salad, crab cakes and tartar sauce, American Indian
corn casserole, organic vegetable medley, crab-stuffed salmon with lemon
butter caper sauce, BBQ beef brisket, and dinner rolls. After our
stomaches settled down, we indulged on desserts - Pinoy style fruit
salad, homemade Italian tiramisu, cake rolls, sapin-sapin, food for the
gods, bibinka, and Linnea Africa's original concoction of strawberry
mousse and pulverized graham crackers. Honduran Amaretto coffee,
Japanese green tea, very smooth Carlos I and Alhambra cigars were
perfect pairing to the desserts.
As usual,
great stories, camaradie, politics and parenting were topics of the
night. We discussed the centennial activities, 2008 lantern parade,
80th anniversary and the BEFAAA endowment fund. We toasted all the
birthday celebrants - Linnea Africa, Michelle Lim, Pete and Etao. The
last group left past 1:30 AM. It was a great night. For those who
could not make it, we wish you were there. Special thanks to my wife,
Pinky, who did all the cooking. I owe her big time.
Next kapihan
in March will be hosted by Bong David of Silver Spring, MD.

Post-Hapunan
note from Willie:
Brods,
Last
Saturday’s Kapihan/Hapunan is another reason why we should not be
missing these get-togethers.
Thanks
to Greg, Pinky and Linnea for hosting the event. The almost all seafood
dinner was delicious. Greg definitely owes Pinky big time for that
sumptuous feast. My wife Lennie was “salivating” as I was telling her
about the crab soup, the crab meat, the stuffed salmon, the beef brisket
and the 5 or six different kinds of desserts.
The
company of brods and their families was a perfect match to the sumptuous
feast. I had the privilege of finally getting to meet Pete, Etao,
Wilford and Didin. These guys are such livewires and they could
certainly get the “story telling a lie” all night.
I am
already looking forward to the next one especially the one that Pete
sort of hinted he was going to host again after not hosting one in a
while, even if he has to have it catered. Pete, we can do put luck you
know.
Once
again, thanks and see you soon.
Willie
