From an Atenean: The University of the Philippines Lantern Parade 2008Published

2 Comments "Just by looking at the big crowd, the floats and the atmosphere, surely no other university can match it." -Me. 6:00 p.m., Running alongside
the parade to AS. Every year, prior to the celebration of Christmas, the University of the Philippines holds their one-of-a-kind Lantern Parade. Every college and organization takes part on these momentous event. A parade of lanterns and astonishing presentations give color to UP Diliman's 2.2-kilometer oval. I was really excited since this was my first time to take part in this event. I am not a UP student but an Atenean and that is why I can say nothing in any university can match, not even my university. The atmosphere is really alive and everyone who can join took place beside the road to cheer on the best floats around. Also, a finale of spectacular fireworks display was lit.
This was one unique Lantern Parade because it is also UP's Centennial and what my UP graduate mother said was true, this is gonna be one hell of a presentation. For instance, the eternal cheerdance competition champion, UP PEP Squad performed in front of Palma Hall, (where I viewed the presentation) and made me realize how good they were. Imagine, perfoming on a basketball court surface would be nice but doing the same actions on tarmac, that would be really a very brave and great performance.
I had a lot of fun joining another university's event. It is really nice and a very good kick-off for your Christmas vacation. It really takes a very big effort for one college or org to build a fully lit float… or a lantern, I should say. We have a similar event in Ateneo not about Christmas but in celebration of the "Linggo ng Wika" which is called Sagala ng mga Sikat although that was very nice, I find UP's Lantern Parade more exciting. Nothing beats it(sorry my dear alma mater… ) It is very nice.
Anyway. It's a nice event, I wish I can join the rest of the parades with the rest of my stay in college. Cheers to University of the Philippines, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I might upload a gallery of pictures. I still don't have the snapshots but I'll upload them on the gallery section of my blog as soon as possible.

From: then ayun! asteeg ng fireworks.. antagal.nangawit kami sa pagtayo at pagtingala..worth it naman. daming surprises.. kala mo tapos na. but then wait! there's more!more!more! (malamang salamat sa o-seven and above un galing)
Note from Mon: If you noticed the video, after Joy to the World, you thought it was the end of the fireworks because Joy had a fade out. Hans the Fireworks contractor programmed it too that there would only be one or two rockets shooting up. Thus, viewers thought that was it, the end. And then the finale of 1812 Overture. It was a good joke on the audience. He he.There is also some thrill in making jokes with the audience.

From: 2008 UP Lantern Parade
Diliman, Quezon City---
What a way to end the UP Centennial
Christmas Celebration than to end it with a parade of colorful
lanterns topped off with a splendid fireworks display! Thousands of students and visitors crowded the streets of UP Diliman yesterday as they watched the annual lanterns being paraded around the academic oval.
"Masaya kasi manood ng lantern parade...( it's fun to watch the
Lantern Parade)" claimed one of the Alumni of CSSP. Colorful lanterns in all shapes and sizes with hundreds of students participating in the event.Among the lanterns were the Carabao lantern made by the UP College of Agriculture, the interesting Landcape Puzzle of the College of Architecture, and the Robo Lantern of the College of Mass Communication.
Some colleges even have their own marching bands, some in colorful
costumes, others have their own gimiks of attracting attentions. "Kanya kanyang style yan! ( Each has their own style!)" says Gina, a
College of Arts and Letters student. The UP Pep Squad certainly didn't pass up the chance to wow the
audience with their cheers and acrobatic stunts.Various constituents
of UP also attended the event, where the Aguila Lantern of UP
Mindanao garnered much attention. After the lantern parade, students and visitors alike were treated
with a marvelous diplay of fireworks lasting for about 15 minutes,
ending the light show with a flash of light sprinkling like dust
under the night sky." "Worth it yung pagpunta ko!" Posted by Peter Angelo at 9:34 PM Labels: Centennial Celebration, UP

My back aches and my hair is dishevelled due to last night. I slept with wet hair as I am drained of energy due to the collective effervescence that passed through me as Beta Epsilon's fireworks drew fractals on the sky, drew smiles on our faces, and drew cheers from a gaping crowd. All thanks to chemical kinetics* and projectile motion. Hoo ha.
This entry was shaped as early as yesterday by adventures and misadventures. Today as I type it is being shaped by euphoria, the residue of collective effervescence, and recollections. I arrived at UP way early for the show because I wanted to shoot some pictures here and there, the way I did for last Tuesday's Oblation Run (minus the run I didn't really see), as you might now see at my Flickr. I stood in front of my first subject as I searched through the messes of my bag for my digicam. Here are some notebooks, here is my umbrella, here are my flashdrives and...and...
My heart broke. In less than a minute it dawned on me that I left my un-edgy digicam at home. I stared at my camera cellphone with some amount of melancholy. Looks like it's you and me again I tell him in my thoughts.
So for the rest of the day before the Lantern Parade--the rest of the day I purposely set-aside for shooting wallpaper-worthy pictures here and there--was spent in whole-hearted contemplation of the philosophical mystery of my forgotten digicam instead. I called forth the other personalities hiding in my being and asked them to pat their Main Self's back for forgetting the digicam for the Lantern Parade. And, of course, saving my handy-dandy cellphone's battery and memory space.
But when the parade started, I knew that I'm in for big time. For the most past of the early part it was just a parade with scant amount of lanterns in between the throng of people moving forward. The real show started when it got dark and I find that fortunate since how do you honestly expect to enjoy lanterns when Earth's very own year-round lantern is still lit up?
However, all those cool lanterns gets a mere 1.5 for the effort. The hard-earned 1.00 goes to the College of Fine Arts for indeed, last night's show belonged to them. Anyone else saying otherwise must reserve appointments with a psychologist. Now. The College of Fine Arts put up a most wonderful presentation. Just wonderful. Fantastic like no other. When it comes to the UP Lantern Parade, UP Colleges are divided into two: Fine Arts and others. Their show erased every previous fascination I had for the lanterns from other UP Colleges. So well done.
But then the colors of this parade would've grayed out if you cheered alone. The same goes for this season and, indeed, every season of the year. I'm thankful that I learned this lesson before learning Scheme and Algebra. Already its been applied numerous times this year and it acts like some feel-good algorithm for me. Thank you to everyone who knows why I am. As always, you awe me more than any lantern, FA or otherwise.
